Revolutionary Hero-Swamp Fox

Between Florence and Charleston, SC (off of Hwy 52) is the burial site of Francis Marion, an American war hero portrayed by Mel Gibson in the movie, "The Patriot". It's a little off the beaten path and if you weren't looking for it, you would have difficulty finding it. Ironically, the memory of Francis Marion, "Swamp Fox", is carried on all over SC, with a univeristy named after him, businesses, and other landmarks use his name and nickname for identification.

Monticello-Home of Pres. Thomas Jefferson

Today is the fourth the anniversary of the Declaration of Independance signing as well as the death of it's author-Thomas Jefferson. A few weeks ago, Traci and I made a trip to his home in Charlottesville, VA and brought back some pictures of the place. The one thing that I found interesting was the number of slaves he owned. He owned a little over one hundred slaves at any given time, but traded, bought and sold over 600 throughout his life. While, only freeing 5 of which they all belonged to the Hemmings famiy. The bottom picture is a Willow Oak that was grafted from, yes- a willow and an oak. He had several gardens for growing food, all lined up along the edge of the mountain side.

Horse show at summer camp

These pictures are of girls at a summer camp where they are given riding lessons. There is a range of experience levels among them from never riding before to very experienced. It looks like they learned quite a lot. Taking care of their horses was their priority in the morning over eating breakfast for themselves.
